The fall tide brings cool mornings, changing trees, and new ideas for creating classroom decorations inspired by autumn. The theme of trees and leaves are central to the fall season and can be re-created in many classroom decorating ideas.

Falling for a Classroom Tree

Using the themes of trees and leaves to decorate the door of your classroom works really well or if your door does not provide you enough space you can decorate one of the walls in the classroom. The first thing you want to do using either cardboard or brown construction paper is make the trunk and the branches of the tree. You can have the students add detail to the branches and trunk by using paint, colored pencils, or crayons.

After you have the branches and the trunk completed it's time to begin making the leaves using brown, orange, red, yellow, and green construction paper. You can even create multi-colored leaves by gluing a couple or several of the colors together to show that the leaves are in the process of changing color. Next, have each child write their name on one of the leaves they created and hang the leaves on the branches of the tree using glue, tape, or staples. If you would like to you can even add more detail to the tree by making birds and cats out of construction paper and hanging them up in the tree.

Inspiring with Watercolor Leaves

Watercolors, with their soft, dreamy tones and the gentle bleeding of one color into another, lend themselves perfectly to autumn classroom decorating. One simple craft is to invite your students to create large watercolor paintings on both sides of thick paper, allowing them to dry in between Then cut out the watercolor paintings into the shapes of leaves and hang the leaves from the ceiling or tape them to the windows. The watercolor leaves make really cool classroom decorations!

You can string together some of the small leaves to make a border for the cork board or chalkboard. Mix the watercolor leaves with construction paper leaves to make the garlands more dynamic. There are also some really nice fall themed bulletin board trimmers you can buy if you would rather do that. If you or your students cut extra large leaves, those can be used as a background for autumn poetry.

Decorating With Words

Because fall is the time of year when students return to school, a great way to get their minds moving (while also creating classroom decorations) is by brainstorming. Ask them to think of as many words as they can that remind them of autumn. After you have a nice selection of autumn themed words, use large stencils to draw them onto different colored construction paper. The words can then be cut out and put up around the room or used as classroom door decorations.

Decorating With Squash and Pumpkins

Create a beautiful display by arranging small pumkins, squash or gourds either on shared tables or a side table in the classroom. These veggies will last a long time and bring the bounty of nature into the classroom, as well as enhance your classroom décor with their colorful skins.

These classroom decorating ideas will help get you started on creating an autumn classroom cornucopia. Use bright autumn colors combined with leaf and pumpkin themes to make classroom decorating interesting and fun. Involve your students by having them make watercolor paintings, cut leaves, and share inspirational words.

Are you bored with your kitchen? You don't need to spend thousands of dollars to give it a little face lift. Just follow these tips and you'll make big changes on a little budget.

Need a colorful window treatment? Simply purchase an inexpensive basswood shade and paint it in a bright color. You can use a partially dry brush and paint randomly for an aged look.

Paint your walls a bright, sunny yellow and randomly paint over a few areas with a deeper yellow, a dark peach, and terra cotta. Mix the paints with a glazing liquid and wipe each coat with a wet cloth before the paint dries.

Paint your old cabinets with a few layers of paint using a dry brush. You can purchase pin stripe tape for automobiles and apply it just under the molding for an attractive accent.

Using a fabric panel with hook-and-loop fastening tape to create skirting around your under-counter areas. You can cover aging appliances such as dishwashers and worn cabinets with a colorful new curtain that hangs from underneath the edge of your counter tops.

Use your mismatched dishes and cups to decorate a stylish shelf hanging on your kitchen wall. Brightly colored dishes and hanging teacups make cute decorations.

Use your treasured family photos to decorate a shelf or nooks. You can use cheap picture frames and a cute shelf as an expression of your home and your life.

If your counter tops are not what they once were, remove the old surface and replace it with colorful, mismatched tiles you can purchase for next to nothing at a discount home store. If your counter tops are uneven, use a piece of plywood to even out the surface before you put down the tiles.

If your refrigerator has seen its better days, have a local supplier cut chalkboard to fit the front and glue it directly to the surface of your refrigerator. Use pine boards to make a border and you will have your own personal note center right on your refrigerator.

Decorating your kitchen need not be expensive. With a little imagination and a little work you can turn even the most boring kitchen into a work of art. Colorful curtains and paint will make a huge difference in any kitchen. No matter how small or dark the space may be.

If your walls are looking a little bare but you don't have the money to go out and buy someone else's art, create your own. This is your home, and it should reflect your personal style. If you're stuck for quick, cheap and fun ways to create artwork, here are some ideas using frames to get you started.

FRAMES

Bargain shop for frames at garage sales, flea markets and vintage shops. Don't worry about the artwork inside or the color of the frame, you can easily change those. You can also look for frames at dollar stores or places like Ikea if you want more of a cohesive look.

PAINT

Next you'll want to head to the hardware store to pick up some spray paint. You should buy a primer as well as a colored spray paint. Glossy black or white give a sophisticated look and you could always paint one frame out of the bunch and accent color, like red, to add some interest.

Follow the instructions on the can for painting and be sure to do it in a ventilated area and to cover anything you don't want to get paint on. If the frames surface is really slick, you may want to sand it first.

CREATE

Once the frames are dry, you can decide what you want to do with them. Here are a few options:

a) Use just the frames - remove the backing, matte and glass and hang the different styles of frames together on the wall, alternating styles, shapes and sizes.

b) Fill them with black and white photos - if you're going to use the matting, try to find frames that have the same color of matte. Gather all of your photos and take them to a photo developing shop to have them changed to black and white and the size you want. To add even more interest, you could crop the photos in the editing process.

c) Make a chalkboard - use the piece of glass that came with the frame and use a chalkboard paint to cover it. Hang it by the door or in the kitchen and use it as a message board or to make your grocery list.

d) Use fabric, wallpaper or even wrapping paper - you can use different patterns and textures to add interest to your wall. Wrap the piece of fabric or paper around the cardboard backing of the frame. You can do some frames with matting and some without.

e) Favorite Quotes - build a wall of inspiration. Write out your favorite words or quotes on your computer and print them off on regular paper or get a little more fancy and buy some specialty paper. Use the same font for all of the frames or use a different one for each frame.

f) Make a mirror - you'll need safety glasses, gloves and a glass cutter and sealer, which you can pick up at most hardware stores. Follow the instructions that come with the glass cutter to score and break the mirror. When it's cut to size, you'll want to seal the edges of the glass to prevent the back of your mirror from turning black over time. The mirror can be adhered to the back of the frame or you can use the frames backing board to keep the mirror in place.

HANG

When it's time to hang your new art on the wall, you can arrange the frames on the floor first. Use hooks on the back of the frames to hang them or you can get a little more creative and use decorative ribbon; use a staple gun to attach each end of the ribbon to the top left and right corner of the frame. You can then hang the ribbon from the nail in the wall (keep in mind that the frame will hang lower).
